Say ‘Wut’? Girl Unit’s latest record

I’m not one for relentless pigeon-holery, but Girl Unit’s enigmatic end product has got me wondering about the various ingredients that go into it.

This year’s earlier release, ‘IRL’, was riddled with all the clicks and snaps of a metronome-melting Gold Panda track, but flowed with the overarching smoothness of a hip hop purist. His guest mix on the Mary Anne Hobbes’ dearly departed show, below, demonstrated a range of influences from Welsh Deep House in the C.R.S.T. crew to the more unlikely ‘Woo Riddim’ by S-X, which has served as a canvassing beat for the likes of D Double E and Trilla to lay down head-turning bars over the past few months.

And these coordinates pretty accurately triangulate Girl Unit’s location on UK Bass Music’s increasingly busy orienteering map. He’s more than a competent Hip Hop producer, but his tracks leave no room for an MC. While not far from sounding like Hudson Mohawke, he holds back, opting for a poppier restrained aesthetic.

That mix’s standout track, ‘Wut’, got a release just over a week ago, and I bought it as soon as I could, along with B-Sides ‘Every Time’ and ‘Showstoppa’. The whole EP is just brilliant and, while the tracks are fairly different, they’re tied together by commonalities like broken, ludicrous vocals and R’n’B grooves.
